Bryce Underwood reacts to 'Batman' title received from Biff Poggi
After quarterback Bryce Underwood exploded in Michigan‘s 63-3 win over Central Michigan last weekend, Wolverines associate head coach Biff Poggi referred to the freshman standout as “Batman.” In an interview with On3’s JD Pickell, Underwood jokingly answered whether he thinks Buffalos Bills QB Josh Allen or Batman is a better comparison for him.
“I mean, Batman, that was the first time I ever heard somebody compare me to Batman,” Underwood said. “It’s a win-win, honestly, so I’ll take that.”
In the win, Underwood completed 16-of-his-25 pass attempts for 235 yards and a touchdown, while throwing one interception. Underwood was even more impressive in the ground, rushing for a team-high 114 yards and two touchdowns.
It was a stunning display for Underwood, who finished his first two games at Michigan with negative rushing yards. Of course, every Batman also needs a couple of sidekicks. With Central Michigan focused on stopping Underwood on the run, the Wolverines’ running backs found immense success.
Wolverines running back Justice Haynes finished the game with 104 rushing yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Running back Jordan Marshall notched 52 rushing and two scores, as well. Michigan is averaging 242.7 rushing yards per game this season, the 15th most in the country.
Now, Underwood will look to carry his momentum into Saturday as Michigan squares off against Nebraska. Underwood is excited for the challenge.
“Just remember that I’m blessed and thanking God for the position I’m in, because no matter what, we wouldn’t be in this position without God,” Underwood said. “I prayed for moments like this, prayed for the strength — the mental strength, the physical strength — to be the best and perform the best I possibly can.

“… I’m having way more fun than I expected to have, honestly. Watching college football as a kid, it was like, ‘Who knows how difficult this could possibly be when I get this much older?’ Just excited to go out every single week and showcase my talents and everything I’ve worked for.”
Nebraska won’t make it easy on Bryce Underwood. The Cornhuskers are 3-0 this season and have held their opponents to 202.0 points per game, the sixth-least in the nation. Alas, Michigan will be Nebraska’s most difficult opponent thus far this season.
“They’re big. They’re powerful. They’re athletic,” Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said this week. “They run all the runs. Anytime your head coach is an offensive line coach, you probably put a lot of stock in that.
“This is an excellent top-25 football team. They’re 2-1 because they played another top-10 football team, and they had a battle. It’ll be an unbelievable challenge. It’ll be a great challenge.”
On Saturday, the Wolverines and Cornhuskers will clash at 2:30 p.m. CDT on Saturday. The game will air live on CBS.
