The MichiganOhio State rivalry has been brought into the Herbstreit household. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit played his college ball in Columbus and saw his son, Zak, play under head coach Ryan Day this past season. But Chase Herbstreit has gone in the opposite direction, choosing to commit to Michigan out of high school.

Saturday in Ann Arbor was the spring game, giving everyone the first look at Herbstreit in a Michigan uniform. As any father would, Kirk was there to support him and even wore a Michigan logo. He was photographed as such during the event.

Isaiah Hole of Wolverines Wire snagged the photo, putting it out on X. You can check it out here, as seeing a Herbstreit associated with Michigan may take some time for everyone to get used to.

Plenty of college football fans see rivalries come into their homes, even the most intense of them all. Maybe a little extra spice at the Herbstreit Thanksgiving dinner two days before The Game takes place in Ann Arbor.

More on Michigan freshman quarterback Chase Herbstreit

Chase Herbstreit played high school football at Cincinnati (OH) St. Xavier, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 2,169 overall recruit in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

“Late-blooming signal caller who shows the ability to make small window throws and excels against pressure,” On3’s Charles Power said in a scouting report. “Checks in at around 6-foot-1 to 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds. Operates a pro-style offense, working from under center and out of the shotgun. Looks to have a strong grip on the overall offensive administration. Shows good zip on intermediate passes. Capable of fitting throws into tight spaces over the middle of the field.

“Has the ability to get off passes without having his feet set. Displays polished footwork within his drops. Plays with quickness and makes defenders miss in the backfield. Improved rushing ability as a senior on both designed runs and as a scrambler. Competitive player who will throw blocks for his running backs and receivers. Playing his best football as a senior, showing year over year improvement. Projects as an FBS level talent, given his skill set and rate of improvement late in his high school career.”

Herbstreit was part of a two-man quarterback class for Michigan. The Wolverines pulled off the biggest flip of the entire 2025 cycle, snagging Five-Star Plus+ and No. 1 overall player Bryce Underwood away from the LSU Tigers.
