Michigan coaching search: Adam Schefter reveals three 'interesting' options for Wolverines after reading text message on-air
The Michigan Wolverines are in a tight spot, needing to quickly find a new head coach late in the carousel. Of course, as one of the premier jobs in the entire sport, there are bound to be plenty of coaches with interest in the Michigan job.
On Thursday morning, the analysts on Get Up were debating some coaching options at Michigan. There, Dan Orlovsky was calling for the Wolverines to take a massive swing, regardless of buyouts and extensions.
“I don’t care about extensions if I’m Michigan,” Orlovsky said. “Clark Lea at Vanderbilt just signed an extension. Don’t care. I’m making that call. Mike Elko at Texas A&M, just signed an extension. Don’t care. I’m making that call. If you’re Michigan, this has to be a big name that gets you into the living room of, ‘Well they have Ryan Day? Well, we have Clark Lea. They have Dan Lanning, but we got Mike Elko.’ Extensions don’t matter.”
It was at this point that host Mike Greenberg noticed that Michigan graduate and ESPN insider Adam Schefter was receiving messages on his phone. So, he directed the conversation there, saying, “Schefty keeps looking at his phone, and I’m dying to peek at it, but I won’t. I have too much respect for you to do that.”
On-air, Adam Schefter turned to his phone and began reading a few names off. That included multiple sitting head coaches.
“Clark Lea is a name that is interesting,” Schefter said. “Jeff Haffley is interesting. … You know who else is interesting? Eli Drinkwitz is interesting.”

Lea is the head coach at Vanderbilt and Drinkwitz is the head coach at Missouri. Both have consistently found their names coming up in rumors this cycle, and both stayed at their schools, signing extensions.
Then, Haffley is the former head coach at Boston College. He left to join the Green Bay Packers as an assistant in 2024 and has been the defensive coordinator there since. So, he does bring some experience in both the region and being a college head coach.
Michigan grad Taylor Lewan encourages Wolverines to make next hire quickly
It’s about to be a very busy month or so for Michigan. Interim head coach Biff Poggi is taking over for bowl preparation. Meanwhile, the Transfer Portal is set to open up. So, Michigan grad Taylor Lewan thinks the Wolverines will need to make a quick hire.
“If they can keep everyone in house, they have the guys to do that, they have the recruiting class to do that. They have everything there and now we’re going into the Transfer Portal, which opens up January 2nd. It is so imperative that Michigan gets the right guy in as fast as possible,” Lewan said. “Because if they do, if they take longer than January 2nd, Michigan is dangerously close to going through what Penn State has gone through for their coaching process.”
