Michigan knows that it will be losing defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, a likely top two pick, to the NFL Draft. But now, the Wolverines are losing another important defensive star. David Ojabo announced on Tuesday that he will be foregoing his remaining eligibility at Michigan, instead declaring for the NFL Draft.

“After careful consideration with my family and loved ones, I have decided to declare for the 2022 NFL Draft,” Ojabo said in a statement.

Ojabo played in 20 games for Michigan, totaling 36 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, three passes defended, five forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Ojabo and Hutchinson formed a dominant duo on the edges of the defensive front this season. Hutchinson is essentially a lock as the first or second overall pick, but Ojabo could find his way into the top ten as well. ESPN NFL Draft expert Todd McShay believes that Ojabo is a top ten talent and could be taken there come draft night.

Ojabo shares messages with Michigan, others after declaring

In his statement he released upon declaring for the NFL Draft, Ojabo thanked his family, Michigan, and others in a heartfelt message.

“Mum, Dad, Victor Jr., Victoria. Thank you for the unconditional love,” Ojabo said to his family. “You guys blindly believed my vision as a 15 year old and I am forever grateful.

Ojabo came to Michigan with minimal experience playing football. Despite that, Ojabo turned himself to one of the best defensive players in the nation, and he is thankful that Michigan gave him the opportunity to do so.

“Coach Harbaugh took a chance on a kid who had only played the sport for a year,” Ojabo said to Michigan. “I am eternally grateful for that opportunity. Thank you to the Michigan coaches and staff for accepting me with open arms. Thank you to my brothers on the team who made me feel at home every day; was a pleasure working with you guys. Lastly, thank you Ms. Todd for making me feel at home from day 1.”

Lastly, Ojabo also thanked Blair Academy, where he began playing football upon coming to America.

“Thank you for accepting me for who I was,” he said. “The transition from Scotland to America was no easy task. Thank you Coach Saylor for letting me give football a chance. Thank you Coach Coyle for taking me under your wing. Lastly, thank you Ms. Tillman for keeping me within your reach at all times.”
