Fired former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore is scheduled to appear in court Friday for his arraignment stemming from his Wednesday night arrest for an alleged assault, according to an update from Pittsfield Township police received by ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. Moore remains in custody in the Washtenaw County Jail as of Thursday morning, local officials told ESPN.

“This investigation is ongoing and under review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor,” Pittsfield Township police told ESPN. “The suspect remains in custody at the Washtenaw County Jail and is expected to appear in court for arraignment on 12/12/25.”

This statement comes amid conflicting reports surrounding Moore’s current legal situation after spending Wednesday night in police custody. The Associated Press previously reported Moore was scheduled to be arraigned later Thursday. ESPN’s Dan Wetzel later reported Moore remains in custody and there were expected to be no decisions on actual charges, let alone an arraignment Thursday.

“The matter involving Mr. Moore remains under active investigation by law-enforcement, and as a result, we do not expect charging decisions or an arraignment today,” Wetzel reported courtesy of the Washtensaw County Prosecutors Office. “Mr. Moore remains in custody at the Washtenaw County Jail.”

Pittsfield Township police released a statement later Wednesday revealing its officers were investigating an alleged assault earlier Wednesday evening. Moore was not mentioned by name but came in response to inquiries about his situation. At the time, charges were pending review by prosecutors.

“Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details,” police said in the statement.

Online records indicate Moore was booked at 8:30 p.m. EST Wednesday night and he remains in custody. More details are expected once he appears in court and prosecutors make their decision regarding potential charges.

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel announced Moore’s firing earlier Wednesday afternoon in a statement, confirming it was for cause due to an inappropriate relationship with team staff member.

“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” Manuel said in a statement. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.”
