As Michigan heads into its Week 3 game against Central Michigan, it will do so without coach Sherrone Moore. He’ll be serving the first of a two-game suspension.

Interim coach Biff Poggi will take over in his place. But what’s more interesting to some is who the first game of the suspension comes against.

It’s the same team that was involved in the sign-stealing scandal that helped Moore get suspended for a failure to cooperate with the NCAA’s investigation: Central Michigan. There’s some cruel irony there.

But at least to Urban Meyer, the entire concept of the Sherrone Moore suspension seems suspect. He explained on The Triple Option podcast.

“The other conversation that not many people talk about is the coaches,” Meyer said. “Was a self-suspension? The NCAA, first of all, I put a red line through the NCAA. In my mind, they do not exist anymore.”

Meyer didn’t really expand on that comment, instead moving on to the irony of the game being against Central Michigan. Of course, that’s the program that had Connor Stalions on the sideline for a game, where he was famously photographed.

That landed both programs in some hot water. Meyer was amazed at the juxtaposition.

“I’m just anxious now. What is it, against Central Michigan, where that guy was on the sidelines?” Meyer said. “You can’t make this up. The guy was dressed in … it was like a Halloween outfit, right? I’m going to go dress like Bear Bryant. He’s on the sideline. I make light of it because … are you sh*tting me? That actually happened.”

Sherrone Moore will serve his two-game ban and then return. During the ban, he can’t be with the team for day-to-day operations for the entirety of the week.

It’ll be a true ban. That’ll make matters difficult for Michigan.

But while this week should be a relative breeze, the Week 4 game against Nebraska could be more challenging. Meyer didn’t seem concerned.

“So the coach is going to be suspended for I think it’s two games, but they’re going to play teams that they’ll just wipe the floor with,” he said. “But I don’t know. That whole thing still…”

He trailed off, deciding not to add any more to the Sherrone Moore drama. Michigan will kick off against Central Michigan at noon ET Saturday on the Big Ten Network.
