Urban Meyer reacts to Sherrone Moore scandal at Michigan: 'I said a prayer for that family'
Urban Meyer took football out of the equation when it came to discussing Sherrone Moore’s firing at Michigan and legal troubles. He simply hoped for the best outcome for him and his family moving forward.
“Yeah, last night I said a prayer for that family,” Meyer said on The Triple Option. “I mean, you got three little girls, you got a guy that was on top of the road a week ago. You know, they find a way, they’re up 6-0 on the Buckeyes at home, and then also you wake up and they’re in this situation. Yeah, rivalries aside, this is all human element. Now, this is something that, from what you read, that’s some serious stuff that went on. And I just all of a sudden, you start seeing the impact. Forget football. Who cares about football?
“I care about those three, you know, his family. So prayers are with them. Hopefully this thing somehow gets cleaner and better, which I don’t know how it will for a while, but you just care about that family.”

“The City of Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore,” Saline Police said in a statement to ESPN. “Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges.”
UM also announced Moore’s firing Dec. 10, which AD Warde Manuel said was for cause. A university investigation found evidence of an alleged inappropriate relationship with a staff member, which Manuel said was grounds for firing. On3’s Pete Nakos also confirmed Wolverines players were abruptly called for a team meeting, where they learned of the news.
“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” Manuel said in a statement. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.”
Michigan went 9-3 during the 2025 regular season, including a 2-0 record with Poggi as acting head coach while Moore served a suspension as a result of a sign-stealing investigation into the program. The Wolverines are set to play against Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
