Mississippi State defensive back Isaac Smith went down with a lower body injury on Saturday against Georgia. Georgia led 10-7 in the second quarter at the time of the injury.

Smith was unable to put weight down with his right leg and was helped off the field. His status at the moment is to-be-determined.

Coming into the game, Smith had 49 total tackles, one sack, one interception and three pass deflection. Over the course of his college career, Smith has 191 tackles, six pass deflections, one sack, one forced fumble and one interception.

As a member of the Class of 2023, Smith was a four-star recruit out of Fulton (Miss.) Itawamba Agricultural, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. He was the No. 4 overall prospect in the state, the No. 12 safety in the class and the No. 157 overall prospect in the class.

Without Smith, Mississippi State will miss a key piece to its defense. Georgia ended up scoring on the drive Smith left the game, giving them a 17-7 cushion in the first half.

Head coach Jeff Lebby already knew facing the Bulldogs and Kirby Smart would be quite the challenge. He said so earlier this week.

“When you look at them this year, both sides of the football, they’ve been really, really good situations,” Lebby said during the SEC teleconference on Wednesday. “That’s the thing to me that pops. That, to me, is what’s given them the opportunity to win games in the fourth quarter.

“It’s because of how they played offensively on third down and then defensively, how they’ve been able to get off the field. I think that’s been a huge part of their success. Kirby’s done just an unbelievable job.”
