Missouri’s Trent Burns missed all of his first season last year with a foot injury. He is now, per the program, set to miss some more time coming into this year with another surgery.

Mizzou released a statement about the latest on Burns in a post on social media on Thursday. The Tigers revealed that Burns has undergone a procedure on his foot, as he has recently been dealing with another stress reaction to his right foot. Burns is set to be sidelined anywhere from 8-12 weeks to recover ahead of the season.

“Redshirt freshman Trent Burns will miss time after a successful surgery on Tuesday,” the release read. “Burns was recently diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right foot, a similar injury which forced him to miss his entire true freshman season in 2024-25. After electing for rest and natural recovery last year, surgery was decided this offseason as the best plan for his return to action. Burns is set to be out the next six weeks before a return-to-play protocol will determine a more precise timeline between a full 8-12 week recovery.”

“After a successful spring and early summer practice window, Trent had an injury to his foot flare up. We all decided that surgery was the best option for his uninterrupted contributions this season,” head coach Dennis Gates said as part of the statement. “His health is our top priority and we know this will only be a small disruption in a great basketball career. We saw in the spring and summer how much of an impact he can have with our program and we look forward to his return to the court during our non-conference season.”

Burns, a native of Cypress, Texas, arrived in CoMo as a Top 100 overall prospect and a four-star in the 2024 recruiting cycle. He also rated as the No. 12 center in the class and the No. 4 player out of the state of Texas. That’s according to the Rivals’ Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Burns came in as part of a Top 15 class in that cycle for Missouri, which was their highest-rated one since 2017. All five signees were Top 150 recruit,s with Burns along with Annor Boateng, Marcus Allen, Peyton Marshall, and T.O. Barrett.

Going into last season, though, Burns dealt with the first stress reaction. He rested it all of last season in redshirting, as he eventually began working out by season’s end for the Tigers.

With this procedure, Burns is likely to miss the first month of the season, with up to 12 weeks getting into the first week of December. Missouri has an exhibition against Kansas State on October 24th before opening its season against Howard on November 3rd. The Tigers have eight games through the month of November.

There’s been excitement around Burns, a 7-foot-5, 260-pound center, to eventually take the floor for Missouri. However, the Tigers will now have to wait a few weeks longer for that, with news of his surgery coming this morning.
