Casey Thompson is bring his talent and experience to the table later this week for Nebraska when they kick off their season. With several starts at Texas last season, he brings a level of veteran moxie that Scott Frost says he hasn’t seen while in Lincoln. He says it’s had an effect on the Cornhuskers team as well.

Frost talked about what Thompson’s experience brings to Nebraska during media on Sunday. He says with age comes things that actually matter and it has shown in Thompson’s ability to take care of the football during fall camp.

“I’d say the biggest thing I would point to with experience is just a lack of mistakes. Anytime you’re a new player, there’s more mistakes than somebody who’s had experience…I’d say Casey had the fewest turnovers (in camp), fewest mistakes,” Scott Frost said. “He’s played a lot of college football…I was smarter at 24 than I was at 18. Life experience and game experience matter.”

Thompson threw 30 touchdowns compared to just nine interceptions as a Longhorn in 2021. His hope is that that ratio only improves as he takes over for the Cornhuskers. He echoed that sentiment plus pride in himself for how he’s improved in that area over his college career.

“I would say that my game experience from last year definitely helped. Being able to have played in 12 games and 10 starts last year? That really helped…The more game reps you have, the easier it is to practice. The game has really slowed down for me at practice. I’m anticipating that next week I’ll be able to feel comfortable and just be able to play my game,” said Thompson. “The biggest thing that the experience has helped is just my decision making. My poise in the pocket, and being able to take care of the ball…Being smart with the football has been the main thing that my game experience has helped the most.”

With Thompson settled in, Scott Frost can breathe a sigh of relief that that piece of the puzzle is in place. Regardless of how it goes sometimes, experience is still experience. Thompson knows what to do in Power 5 football and Frost thinks that, because of that, he will be able to do everything the staff will ask of him over the course of the season.

“Casey’s played a lot of football and he’s plenty talented to do everything we need a quarterback to do in the run and in the pass game. I think that’s going to be important for us early on here in the season.”
