Following the departure of Phil Longo for Wisconsin, the North Carolina Tar Heels have hired Chip Lindsey away from UCF to fill the role of offensive coordinator on Mack Brown’s staff. The program announced the decision on Thursday, and reportedly had the thumbs up from star quarterback Drake Maye, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Chip, his wife Cecily, and their four children, Claire, Caroline, Cooper and Conner, to the Carolina football family,” Brown said in the team’s announcement. “Chip is well-versed in UNC’s offensive style of play and he has a wealth of experience working with some of the greatest offensive minds in the country. You can see that in the way his offenses play.

“Chip is multiple in his approach and has the unique skill of adapting based on personnel. He’s developed quarterbacks at a high level including two current NFL QBs in Nick Mullens and Jarrett Stidham. Chip does a great job teaching the young men he works with and giving them the ability to maximize their potential. Everyone I spoke with during the search raved about him as both a coach and a person and we’re thrilled he and his family are part of our program.”

Prior to UCF, Lindsey was the head coach at Troy from 2019-2021. He amassed a record of 15-19 over three seasons.

During his lone season as offensive coordinator at UCF, Lindsey guided an offense that ranked 26th nationally in scoring (34.4 ppg), 11th in total offense (480.6 ypg), and eighth in rushing offense (236.1 ypg). The Knights’ rushed for 200 or more yards in nine games in 2022 and their 33 rushing TDs tied for 10th nationally and led the AAC.

North Carolina returns to action Dec. 28 against Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.

North Carolina hires Randy Clements as new offensive line coach

On Wednesday, the Tar Heels announce Randy Clements as the program’s new offensive line coach.

Clements comes over to Chapel Hill after spending the last two seasons with North Texas. Head coach Mack Brown welcomed his new staff member in a statement.

“We’re excited that Randy, his wife Polly, and their sons Jordan and Jayson are a part of the Carolina football family,” Brown said, via a release. “Randy is a tough, hard-nosed offensive line coach that has a tremendous amount of experience working in systems similar to our offense. He’s helped produce explosive offenses everywhere he’s been, while showing a knack for protecting the quarterback and limiting negative plays. Randy has shown an aptitude for identifying and developing offensive linemen and his attention to detail shows in his linemen’s ability to play with great technique.

“The teams he’s been a part of have consistently run the ball effectively, and everyone we talked to thought very highly of him as a coach and leader of young men. I believe Randy is the perfect fit for our offensive system moving forward and we can’t wait for him to get to Chapel Hill and get to work.”
