Oklahoma State Cowboys linebacker Jonathan Agumadu has committed to transfer to the North Carolina Tar Heels. He has four seasons of eligibility remaining.

Jonathan Agumadu played his high school football at McKinney in Texas. There, he was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2024, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the 1,341st-ranked player overall and the 123rd-ranked linebacker in that recruiting cycle.

As a freshman in 2024, Agumadu played in four games for the Cowboys. Despite that, he did not record any stats in his appearances.

While in high school, Agumadu made the switch to playing linebacker ahead of his junior season. So, he’s still relatively new to it. As a high school senior, he had six sacks, 37 tackles, four tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries, a blocked field goal, and a touchdown in 11 games.

2024 was a difficult season for Oklahoma State as a program. The Cowboys would go 3-9 and finish the season on a nine-game losing streak. They didn’t win a single game against a Big 12 opponent. Along with that came changes on the coaching staff, including at defensive coordinator. Todd Grantham is replacing Bryan Nardo in 2025.

Now, Jonathan Agumadu is going to another team going through a coaching change of its own. North Carolina and Mack Brown parted ways following the 2024 season. That was after a 6-6 regular season and a step back from the past couple of years under Brown. To replace him, the Tar Heels brought in legendary NFL head coach Bill Belichick. The staff underneath him turned over too with Steve Belichick becoming the Tar Heels’ next defensive coordinator.

One key change Bill Belichick brought to North Carolina was hiring a general manager. Michael Lombardi, a longtime NFL colleague, has taken over that role and become a key figure in building the team’s roster.

North Carolina has also been active in the Transfer Portal. The Tar Heels have the 21st-ranked transfer class in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. This comes amid massive turnover for the Tar Heels this offseason. In total, 40 players have transferred out and 35 have officially transferred to the program. However, that number doesn’t yet include Jonathan Agumadu.
