Jeremiyah Love ties Jerome Bettis single-season TD record vs. Syracuse, strikes Heisman Trophy pose

Amid a dominant showing against Syracuse, Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love put his name alongside a program great. He tied Jerome Bettis’ single-season touchdown record.
Love broke free for a 68-yard touchdown run in the third quarter – his third score of the game – to make it a resounding 56-0 lead over Syracuse. That marked his 20th touchdown of the season, tying “The Bus” for the most in a single season in program history.
Afterward, Love celebrated accordingly. He struck the Heisman Trophy pose as he continues to make the case for an invitation to New York for the ceremony next month.
The long touchdown was the latest big play for Love in Saturday’s game against Syracuse. Notre Dame’s offense didn’t take the field until the 7:08 mark of the first quarter, and by then, it was a 21-0 Fighting Irish lead. But Love still made his presence felt right away, ripping off a 45-yard touchdown run on that possession.
In the second quarter, Love again found the end zone on a 14-yard rush to extend Notre Dame’s lead to 49-0. Then, he scored a third time on the 68-yard run, giving him 171 rush yards and three touchdowns on the day as Marcus Freeman put the second unit int he game.

Saturday’s performance added to Love’s historic season at Notre Dame. He entered Week 13 with the fourth-most rushing yards in the nation at 1,135 and sat tied for fourth in the country with 14 rushing touchdowns, as well.
Love has also been generating buzz in Heisman Trophy circles entering the game against Syracuse. He came in at No. 3 in the On3 Heisman Trophy Poll after Week 12, and ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit said Love will be on his ballot, as well.
“So for me, I think it’s going to be who has the big windows these last two or three weeks,” Herbstreit continued. “Who has a chance to really kind of have that closing argument?
“Typically, their focus is a lot on the quarterbacks in a lot of the recent years, but I still think Jeremiyah Love at Notre Dame — he’ll be on my ballot. I don’t know if he’s going to be No. 1, 2 or 3, but he’s definitely up in the top three. But in these last two or three weeks, hopefully everybody holds on to their ballot, see who can have that hot hand and then make that vote.”
