Marcus Freeman talks offensive philosophy, relationship with Tommy Rees

New Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has developed a reputation as one of college football’s brightest defensive minds, but his offensive philosophy has been molded by offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.
During his introductory press conference, Marcus Freeman discussed his offensive philosophy and continued relationship with Tommy Rees. While he did not go into specifics, the mold has been set for the upcoming recruiting class.
“It’s what you’re seeing on the field,” said Freeman. “It’s what you’ve seen Tommy (Rees) do. When I talked to Jack Swarbrick about the opportunity to keep Tommy Rees that was without question. And what you see from our offensive side of the ball is a group that – from the beginning of the season until now – has just played better and better and better. I’m not looking for a certain scheme, I’m looking for a group that’s productive and does the job necessary to win.”
While Freeman does not lock himself into a specific scheme on offense, he does have a clear idea of the type of players he wants within that system – and more importantly – he knows who he wants leading them.
Notre Dame’s ability to retain both Freeman and Rees after the departure of former head coach Brian Kelly shows a commitment to the program which many are excited to see moving forward. With a sneak preview of the duo’s new coaching relationship in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma State, hope continues spreading.

Setting the Notre Dame standard
The hiring of Marcus Freeman is drawing rave reviews from Notre Dame fans and experts alike. The coach has done all the right things since joining the Fighting Irish coaching staff, and now he’ll have the unquestioned support of his players as their leader.
One of the most important things to Notre Dame is their standard of greatness. In his introductory press conference, Freeman revealed what his standard will be for his team.
“I got to be myself, and that’s what I told them,” Freeman responded, when asked how he convinced the Notre Dame brass to have confidence in him. “Here’s the things that I believe we can do to raise the level and raise the standard, but I’m going to do it the only way I know how — and that’s being myself. Doing it as a teammate. That’s doing it with others.
“We’re going to achieve greatness as a group. As a team. And they accepted it. And that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to do this thing together as a team.”
