Notre Dame basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry explained why he shook the hands of fans in the student section after their most recent win. The Fighting Irish improved to 9-3 with an 82-58 win over Evansville at home Saturday.

It was to show his appreciation, to put it simply. Shrewsberry loved how the student section grew year to year and week to week even.

Right ahead of the holidays and winter break, Notre Dame’s head coach felt it was proper to thank them for their support. Gotta keep them coming back right?

“That crew, you know, unfortunately, I can pick out who comes every game,” Shrewsberry said postgame. “So like, that group has grown a little bit too, but those guys, like, I see them all. I see them all the time. I see them, you know, they’re in that section every game, and, you know, part of the legion and doing stuff. So like, you know, we’re getting close to finals. We’re getting close to them leaving for a little bit of time.

“I just want to just show them love and thank them for coming … Maybe it started with four of them, and they brought a couple buddies with them, and now they just keep adding up and adding up. So I appreciate those guys and gals that keep coming and keep showing up for us each year.”

Following the game, Shrewsberry also mentioned he wanted his team to keep building upon their good fortune. Now’s not the time to take their foot off the gas.

“Yeah, absolutely,” Shrewsberry said. “We don’t want to lose any momentum from our group and how we’re playing and what we’re doing. It’s all hands on deck with our guys. People’s roles don’t really shift. The time they play might shift, but you still need to be a star in what you do. That’s what we’re looking for for our group. But no, we want to keep building.

“We have an entire season ahead of us that we’re locked in on playing. We have the game on Wednesday, and I told our guys, it’s the most important game of our season, because it’s the next game. The moment you take your eyes off of that and start looking at what happened behind you, that’s when you take your eyes off the road and something bad happens.”
