Report: Notre Dame coach Mike Brey not retiring from coaching despite being done in South Bend

Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey reportedly will not retire from coaching basketball, according to Jeff Goodman. He is, however, still stepping down as head coach of the Fighting Irish following the season.
“Big news out of Notre Dame,” Goodman wrote on Twitter. “Mike Brey tells me that he is not retiring. ‘Definitely not done coaching.’ – Brey. Great to hear from one of the best guys in the business.”

Brey originally said he was going to step down as Notre Dame’s head coach at the end of season. Based on the comments reported from Goodman, Brey wanted to continue coaching, but is done at Notre Dame regardless, according to the report.
“It has been a great run for me and our program over the past two decades, but it is time for a new voice to lead this group into the future,” Brey said in a statement last month. “I want to thank our student-athletes, assistant coaches and support staff who have played such a key role in the culture we have created.”
Notre Dame fell to 10-15 after a 93-87 loss Saturday at home to Virginia Tech.
