Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner on ankle injury, relationship with Marcus Freeman, Drew Pyne
Notre Dame is hosting their Blue-Gold Game on Saturday, but quarterback Tyler Buchner is sidelined. According to the broadcast on Peacock, Buchner injured his ankle walking down the stairs while speaking with one of his professors. As a precaution, Marcus Freeman decided to hold him out of the contest.
Still, Buchner was able to give an interview on the sidelines during the event. First, NBC wanted to know how Buchner’s ankle was feeling, and if there was anything to worry about long-term.
“Ankle feels good,” responded Buchner. “Just been a lot of fun, coming out here and watching these guys. All the hard work they put in. So, you know, I’m honestly having a great time. The weathers been great. A lot of fans came out. The whole team is really thankful that we have such great support, and such great fans.”
Luckily, Buchner avoided disaster with his freak accident. Continuing, the Notre Dame quarterback revealed how his relationship with Freeman has been since the former Fighting Irish defensive coordinator took over head coaching duties from now-LSU coach Brian Kelly.
“Meeting with Coach Freeman has been really instrumental in building a relationship with him,” explained Buchner. “It allows him to coach us harder when we’re on the field, because we have that great relationship. He’s been awesome. We’ve learned a ton through me with him when it comes to the defensive side of the ball, things like that.”

Evidently, Buchner is cultivating a solid relationship with his new head coach. However, he’s embroiled in a quarterback battle with fellow Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne. The battle may be heated on the field, but off the field the duo are great friends, as Buchner explained.
“Me and Drew spend so much time together, not only because we play the same position, and we’re really good friends. But it’s because we have the same goals. We want the same things for each other, and this team. So, we support each other. We watch film together, we go to practice early — we do all these things together, which really fosters a great relationship with us, and hopefully betters this team for the future.”
As you can see, Tyler Buchner gave some great insight into his health, and his relationships with Marcus Freeman and Drew Pyne during the Blue-Gold Game. Hopefully the Notre Dame signal caller can get back on the field sooner rather than later.
