For the third time (2019 and 2023 previously) in the 11-year history of the College Football Playoff, Ohio State was tabbed as the top team in the country in the first CFP Rankings of the season. The 8-0 (5-0) Ohio State Buckeyes sit ahead of No. 2 Indiana (9-0, 6-0), No. 3 Texas A&M (8-0, 5-0), No. 4 Alabama (7-1, 5-0), and No. 5 Georgia (7-1, 5-1).

The Buckeyes have been incredible this season, as they are defeating opponents by nearly 30 points per game. Although they are 8-0, they have received criticism from fans around the sport, due to a perceived ‘soft schedule.’ However, two of Ohio State‘s eight wins (No. 11 Texas and No. 23 Washington) were present in the first edition of the CFP Rankings.

Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer reacted to his Buckeyes being selected as the No. 1 team in the rankings on ‘The Triple Option College Football Playoff Ranking Reaction.’ Meyer believed that the committee got it right, placing his former program ahead of fellow unbeatens Indiana and Texas A&M.

“We got to see Ohio State up close and personal twice, actually three times this year,” Meyer said. “Offensively, they’re so much improved from when they played Texas. I love Indiana. I love their staff and I love their players. And we’ve seen them at least once, maybe twice this year. I can’t remember.”

Meyer claims Ohio State has better players than Indiana

Ohio State has better players at the end of the day,” Meyer continued. “It’s not a disrespect to IU at all. Just watching the NFL Draft, it’s gonna be ridiculous again. So at the end of the day, they got it right. Does that mean Ohio State will beat Indiana? I mean, I don’t know, man. IU does not make mistakes.”

Though things started out a tad shaky this season for sophomore quarterback Julian Sayin, he has really hit his stride leading the Buckeye offense. Through eight games, Sayin has passed for 2,188 yards, 23 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He has dominated Big Ten competition, as he’s tossed 15 touchdowns and no interceptions in games against WashingtonMinnesota, No. 17 IllinoisWisconsin, and Penn State.

The Buckeyes, with their Heisman Trophy contender at quarterback, continue their march to the College Football Playoff this weekend at Purdue. They are looking to become just the second program in the CFP era (Georgia in 2021 and 2022) to win back-to-back national titles.
