Oklahoma's Jayden Gibson (1) catches a pass beside Arkansas State's Leon Jones (2) during a college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the Arkansas State Red Wolves at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla., Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023.

Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Jayden Gibson is no longer with the program, head coach Brent Venables revealed Wednesday. Gibson got injured during the offseason and was previously expected to be back before the opener vs. Illinois State. Flash forward a few weeks and ties have now been cut.

“Jayden is no longer with the team,” Venables said on the SEC Coaches Teleconference.

Gibson spent three full seasons in Norman, only playing in two. He missed all of 2024 due to a knee injury, working to get back for spring practice. However, a setback meant he did not practice with OU during the spring.

Venables maintained that Gibson was on schedule throughout the summer before beginning preseason camp. Nothing ever came to fruition, though. Gibson has not been available through six games at a position where Oklahoma continues to struggle to field consistently healthy bodies.

Exactly what is next for Gibson, Venables did not reveal. Eligibility remains for him, being listed as a redshirt junior on the official 2025 Oklahoma roster. Gibson certainly can enter the NCAA transfer portal and attempt to find a new home moving forward.

“Expectation is Oklahoma WR Jayden Gibson will enter the transfer portal, source tells @On3sports,” On3’s Pete Nakos said via X.

More on Jayden Gibson, time in Norman with Oklahoma

Gibson played high school football at Winter Green (FL) West Orange, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 147 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Multiple schools in the Southeast originally battled for Gibson during his recruitment. Florida won out at one point, securing a commitment on Oct. 13, 2021. Just under two months later, Oklahoma extended an offer and put together an official visit. By Dec. 14, the flip was made to the Sooners.

During his freshman and sophomore campaigns, Gibson played in 22 games with one start. He caught 15 passes for 387 yards and five touchdowns. All of those scores came in 2023, getting into the endzone on over a third of his receptions.

Many inside the building hoped another positive step would be taken moving into his third year on campus. But the knee injury took Gibson off his trajectory. An unfortunate way to end his career in Norman, as Oklahoma continues on with SEC play Saturday vs. South Carolina.
