Greg McElroy calls Oklahoma's spot in AP Top 25 rankings 'genuinely laughable'

After a down 2024 season in which Oklahoma went just 6-7 and lost in the Armed Forces Bowl, the Sooners emerged onto the college football landscape last Saturday with a convincing 24-13 win over Michigan in Norman.
Following the win, the Sooners rose just five spots from No. 18 to No. 13 in the AP Top 25 poll. ESPN‘s Greg McElroy however revealed on Wednesday’s ‘Always College Football‘ podcast that he believes the Sooners should be even higher. He has them at No. 5 in his personal rankings.
“(Oklahoma) had a dominant, resume-defining victory in the only ranked vs. ranked matchup of the week,” McElroy said. “I think it’s so laughable because I look at the AP Poll and right now it has Oklahoma at No. 13. I mean that is genuinely laughable. They’re behind Clemson for crying out loud. Clemson through six quarters looked lifeless. Oklahoma goes out and convincingly beats Michigan and by the way it could have been worse if not for a couple of mistakes in the game.”
“Turnover or two in the game, giving Michigan a new lease on life a few times in the game. That thing could have been worse. There were plays left on the field. So if I’m grading Oklahoma‘s performance last week, it’s probably like a B+. Really good win and good on defense but there’s more in the tank there. Oklahoma comes all the way up from No. 14 into the top-five.”
“Very few teams with a better win and very few teams that can beat you in as many ways as Oklahoma can beat you. They’re at Temple this week, but that’ll do nothing to enhance my prediction and evaluation of the Oklahoma Sooners.”

The Sooners absolutely owned the matchup with Michigan, as they outgained the Wolverines 408-288 and recorded 10 more first downs. The game also served as coming out party for quarterback John Mateer, who has ascended to one of the early season favorites to win the Heisman Trophy. In the win, he completed 21/34 passes for 270 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed for two more scores.
“We’ve been excited for this game for a long time,” Mateer said postgame. “I’m proud of these guys. We beat them and didn’t play our best game because we had a bunch of turnovers and a bunch of things we need to clean up. But I’m so proud of my teammates.”
Oklahoma could climb even higher in McElroy’s top-25 (along with the AP Poll) with a dominant win over Temple this weekend.
