Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy following Week 4 of the college football season. Then news broke that he had suffered an injury to his throwing hand that would require surgery.

The timeline for Mateer’s return is a few weeks out, which could cause him to miss some key games. While Oklahoma is on a bye this week, it will take on Kent State and Texas after that. Both of those games are in jeopardy for Mateer, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter.

But what about his Heisman Trophy odds? Those have shifted considerably.

According to BetMGM, John Mateer’s Heisman Trophy odds have gone from +700 to +2200, indicating the payout would now be significantly higher should Mateer win college football’s top award. It also indicates he’s probably less likely to do so given the missed time.

You can view the complete list of Heisman Trophy odds after Week 4 here, including the latest update for Mateer. As noted, there are some significant changes.

John Mateer has been one of the most productive quarterbacks in the country to date. He has emerged as an elite dual-threat prospect, one year after transferring in from Washington State.

The veteran gunslinger has thrown for 1,215 yards and six touchdowns, against three interceptions. He has also run for 190 yards and five scores.

Are those numbers enough to keep him in the Heisman Trophy race while others pile up more statistics in his absence? We shall see.
