Keontez Lewis injury update: Oklahoma wide receiver stretchered off field vs. Kent State

Offensive injuries were a big part of the story in 2024 for the Oklahoma Sooners. Now, after losing quarterback John Mateer due to hand surgery, there is another big-time scare for OU. Wide receiver Keontez Lewis went down during Saturday’s game vs. Kent State and wound up needing help to get off.
“Keontez Lewis runs right into the wall in the end zone and is down for the #Sooners,” George Stoia of On3 | Rivals’ Sooner Scoop said via X. “That did not look good… He’s moving his legs and arms.”
Due to the injury occurring within the first five minutes of the game, Lewis did not have a chance to make an impact. He did not record a catch before leaving on the cart.
Lewis entered Saturday tied atop the stat sheet with the most receiving touchdowns for Oklahoma, two. Those came in the season opener against Illinois State in what turned into a career day. Overall, his connection with Mateer is a good one, totaling 210 yards on 17 receptions.
***UPDATE*** Later in the game, the Oklahoma radio broadcast provided an update on Lewis. Initial reports are positive, although he was still transferred “offsite” to make sure everything is okay.

“Initial evaluation of Keontez Lewis by OU sports medicine staff proved promising,” OU Sports said during the radio broadcast. “Out of an abundance of caution he has been sent offsite for additional testing.”
Oklahoma dealing without wide receiver Keontez Lewis
In the short term, Oklahoma should be okay without Lewis on the field. OU walked onto the field heavy favorites against Kent State, even as backup quarterback Michael Hawkins led the offense out there. The scoreboard currently does not have anything on there but flash forward a few hours and the Sooners likely are up by quite a few.
Long-term is where questions might be asked. Oklahoma travels down to Dallas for the Red River Shootout against the Texas Longhorns. Whether or not Mateer will be available is a different scenario. But if the answer winds up being no, all the offensive firepower is going to be needed.
For now, all focus is on making sure the Sooners come out further unscathed and with a victory. From there, an update on Lewis should come from head coach Brent Venables during his postgame press conference. A big storyline to follow for Oklahoma throughout the week before the Texas game.
