Keontez Lewis injury update: OU medical staff send WR offsite 'out of an abundance of caution'

Oklahoma has spent most of Saturday vs. Kent State with Keontez Lewis. The Sooners’ wide receiver ran into a brick wall in the back of the end zone early on. After being down for a while, a cart came onto the field to take Lewis into the locker room.
An update on Lewis’ condition came from Oklahoma later in the game, appearing to be positive. However, he still made his way to “offsite” in order to be evaluated further. All things considered, not the worst news given
“Initial evaluation of Keontez Lewis by OU sports medicine staff proved promising,” OU Sports said during the radio broadcast. “Out of an abundance of caution he has been sent offsite for additional testing.”
Lewis entered the day as Oklahoma’s leader in receiving touchdowns at two. Both came in the season opener against Illinois State, connecting well with quarterback John Mateer. The Sooners were hoping Lewis would get into rhythm with Michael Hawkins under center due to Mateer’s injury. Unfortunately, his afternoon lasted less than five minutes.
In total this season, Lewis has 17 receptions for 210 yards. Wide receiver is a position where Oklahoma needs all the help it can get, no matter who is back there at quarterback. Injuries decimated them in 2024 and they wanted to avoid the same moving forward. Hopefully, Lewis turns out to be okay and the offsite tests come back clean.

Health of Keontez Lewis a storyline heading into Red River Shootout vs. Texas
For the time being, the Sooners are working on putting the finishing touches on Kent State. Not much doubt regarding the game remains. This would be a fifth consecutive win for Oklahoma, looking prime to contend in the SEC this season.
Week 7 brings the program’s biggest game of the season to this point. As is tradition with the second Saturday in October, OU heads to Dallas for the Red River Shootout to face off against the Texas Longhorns. Not many venues better in college football than the Cotton Bowl.
A lot of attention will be on the health of Mateer. And for good reason, given his start to the season before getting surgery on his throwing hand. Lewis is an important piece Oklahoma is going to wind up needing against their arch-rivals next Saturday, though. Head coach Brent Venables should provide an update on his wide receiver during the postgame press conference.
