Oklahoma practice video shows Dillon Gabriel padded up ahead of Texas, Red River Rivalry

One-half of the Red River has their quarterback situation figured out for Saturday, as Texas will trot out Quinn Ewers as the starter. Oklahoma still has questions to answer, especially when it comes to the health of Dillon Gabriel. Taking an illegal hit against TCU, the Sooners’ starter’s status is in question ahead of their trip to Dallas.

Head coach Brent Venables has not provided many updates and most information has been done through detective work. On Monday, Gabriel was filmed without pads, just wearing a jersey and shorts while on the sideline. Now, another video has potentially hinted at the quarterback’s health.

Oklahoma posted a hype video for Saturday’s rivalry game against Texas, showing different clips of practice. At one point, Gabriel is spotted, wearing pads — even if it’s only half his body. The video was posted on Wednesday night and Gabriel pops up on the right side around eight seconds in.

If Gabriel can go, it will mark his sixth start as the Oklahoma quarterback but first in the intense rivalry game. Before his injury, there were some struggles against TCU, completing just 48.3% of his throws. Getting back onto the field healthy will be the top priority within the program but once Gabriel is, some corrections will need to be made as well.

Davis Beville will most likely get the call if Gabriel is unavailable. Venables has not given final word and most likely won’t until we move closer to kickoff at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Dillon Gabriel spotted without pads earlier in week

Gabriel was on the receiving end of a scary hit against TCU when sliding to the ground. He was not able to return to the game and entered concussion protocol. Now, Gabriel’s status ahead of Saturday’s Red River Showdown vs. Texas is in question.

Offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby would not provide an update on Gabriel and neither would head coach Brent Venables on Tuesday. However, some information did come out via a video from outside of practice. Gabriel was seen without pads, only wearing a blue practice jersey.

If Gabriel was not practicing on Monday, he will have four more days to get ready for the Texas matchup. While the quarterback is not the only injury the Sooners are dealing with, he might be the most important if he cannot play in Dallas.
