Offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. is returning to Ole Miss to coach during the College Football Playoff, the school announced on Tuesday. Weis was initially on one of the planes taken by former head coach Lane Kiffin to Baton Rouge, presumably to take a job at LSU. Now, the plan is to make his way back to Oxford for the Rebels’ CFP run.

Weis has a long history with Kiffin, dating back to when the two were at Alabama together during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. After one year apart, the two reconnected at FAU. However, Weis was on the move once again in 2020 to become USF‘s offensive coordinator.

As part of the announcement, Kiffin released a statement on the decision. Tuesday’s College Football Playoff rankings reveal were part of the decision.

“With the playoff committee releasing updated rankings tonight, I wanted it to be known that after conversations with LSU, we are allowing Charlie to return to Ole Miss to coach the team during the playoffs,” Kiffin said. “I’ve already made the committee aware of this and I’m hopeful this decision will allow Ole Miss to receive the highest ranking possible because these great players are very deserving of that. I’m excited that Charlie will be back to help coach the greatest team in the history of Ole Miss.”

The decision to link back up at Ole Miss came in 2022 when Weis assumed the role of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He has worked with Kiffin ever since then and initially planned to continue to at LSU.

Now-former defensive coordinator Pete Golding is taking over as the permanent head coach, having an offensive staff to fill. For the time being, though, he’ll have Weis with him.

More on Ole Miss Rebels, College Football Playoff outlook

Ole Miss finished the season with an 11-1 record, making them a virtual lock to be included in the 12-team field. Exactly where they will be placed in the rankings is unknown, though, especially since Kiffin is no longer there.

On3’s Chris Low previously reported on the committee possibly sliding the Rebels down due to Kiffin’s departure. College Football Playoff committee chair Hunter Yurachek was asked about the (then-potential) situation last Tuesday.

“We’ll take care of that when it happens,” Yurachek said. “We don’t look ahead. The loss of a player, the loss of a key coach is in the principles of how we rank the teams. But again, we don’t have a data point for Ole Miss without their head coach.”
