Lane Kiffin has his own thoughts on the transfer portal. In an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Kiffin offered his thoughts on what he would change about one of college football’s most divisive topics.

“You got to put a window so they can only go in at these times,” started Kiffin. “And the NIL should be on a contract. Because some of these places, the day before signing day are sitting here saying oh come here, you’re going to get $50,000 when you get here and the kid goes okay, yeah I sign. And then we hear the stories that they get there and they don’t see anything.

“So, there should be a way that – like a free agent contract – hey, you get to see the contract before you go there.”

As you can see, Kiffin has some interesting ideas for the transfer portal. His first idea regarding a window of when to enter the portal makes sense, but his gripes with NIL are an entirely different animal.

With his words, Kiffin is accusing programs of basically utilizing a bait-and-switch to get commits to join their school. If it ever comes to fruition, players and companies could benefit.

Later, Kiffin continued to elaborate on why he believes it’s unfair to players the way certain schools are utilizing NIL.

“I’m just tired of the stories you hear where a school or two I know very well say to the kid, ‘You will get this when you get here.’ And then, the kids in the portal a year later because they didn’t get anything,” stated Kiffin.

Lane Kiffin is advocating for some changes to the transfer portal. As the landscape of college football continues to change, time will tell if he gets his wishes.

Lane Kiffin on Urban Meyer, NFL

Lane Kiffin is unique in many ways. One of the many reasons why is the journey that led him to Ole Miss. Before he was the beloved coach of the Rebels, the story of Kiffin’s coaching career featured an infamous stint in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders.

Moreover, Kiffin has an interesting perspective on coaches who make the jump. Nowadays, perhaps no coach that did it has been in the news more than Urban Meyer. Like Kiffin, the former Ohio State coach was fired from his job coaching professionals.

Earlier this week while joining The Rich Eisen Show, Kiffin gave his thoughts on the Meyer situation.

“I wouldn’t be educated enough on what happened there,” started Kiffin. “Not following it with our stuff going on and everything, so I got no idea what happened there. That transition has worked a few times, but a lot of times it doesn’t work.

“I’m not saying it happened in that one. But you know, you’re dealing with college players versus professional athletes that are making a lot of money. It’s a different world.”

NFL teams are usually weary of coaches who make the move from college to the league. Now, Meyer will be an example used for years to come.

At the least, Lane Kiffin has bragging rights over Urban Meyer when it comes to coaching in the NFL — his five wins dwarf Meyer’s two.
