Lane Kiffin on avoiding $500k field-storming fine vs. LSU: ‘It buys you half of one of their DBs’

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin is never short on supply of jokes, and he had plenty after a 24-19 win against No. 4 LSU on Saturday. After expressing his delight that Rebels fans did not storm the field after the big win, the coach was asked how valuable the money saved from that will be in the NIL era.
Ole Miss avoids a $500,000 fine from the SEC as a result of its fans choosing not to rush the field. Kiffin joked that would be about the price to lure in a player from LSU through the portal.
“It gets you half of one of their DBs, since you’re asking,” he said. “…I just think it’s where we’re at. We lost down there and LSU stormed the field last year against Ole Miss. It doesn’t seem like that’s supposed to happen. Then when we beat them here we don’t storm the field. So good spot to be in.”
The comments from Kiffin are even more interesting considering the Rebels did have a former LSU defensive back, Sage Ryan, transfer to the team this offseason. Ryan finished the victory Saturday with three tackles and one pass defended against his former team.
In fact, it was a great effort for the Ole Miss defense overall. The Rebels held the Tigers to just 57 yards rushing and 2.6 yards per carry while recording an interception, a sack and eight QB hurries.

That wasn’t all Kiffin said about fans choosing not to storm the field. The coach also addressed it in his opening statement, explaining that he believes it shows where the Ole Miss is at as a program.
“Appreciate them not rushing the field,” Kiffin said. “…To me, that’s really cool that you get to a place at a program where you do beat the No. (4) team in the country and you don’t rush the field. We did what we’re supposed to do and that’s win the game. That makes me happy that this program’s got to that place.”
The win against LSU was just just the second against a top five team for Lane Kiffin during his tenure at Ole Miss. He also defeated No. 2 Georgia in Oxford last season, and Rebels fans did storm the field after that game.
It looks like there is a different expectation this year, however, as Ole Miss had the attitude that it belonged on Saturday. We’ll see if that continues to carry over into the back half of the season as they look to contend for an SEC Championship.
