In the second inning of Ole Miss‘ showdown against Arkansas in the SEC Tournament on Friday, Rebels outfielders Ryan Moerman and Isaac Humphrey collided while chasing down a fly ball in right-center field. The two players remained on the ground after the collision and trainers attended to them.

Moerman and Humphrey were each able to stand on their own power after being attended to. However, Moerman fell to the ground again and began holding his knee after attempting to run off the field. The SEC Network broadcaster said the play was “as violent of an outfield collision” as he’s ever seen.

Arkansas’ Cam Kozeal ultimately scored an inside-the-park home run on the play. The run cut Ole Miss’ lead to 5-2. Humphrey stayed in the game after the impact but Moerman left the game. Hayden Federico took Moerman’s place in the outfield.

Moerman transferred to Ole Miss this past offseason after spending three years at Illinois, where he amassed 128 appearances and 116 starts. He was an All-Big Ten Second-Team selection in the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Moerman has been a standout in the outfield for the Rebels this season. He entered the SEC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday with 75 putouts and zero errors. He boasts a .271 batting average and 47 RBI’s this season.

After going to the locker room in the second inning, Moerman underwent concussion protocol. He didn’t have a concussion but did suffer a knee sprain. Rebels head coach Mike Bianco confirmed that Moerman will not return against the Razorbacks.

“obviously a scary moment for both guys. And you know, some heads and knees, a lot of different things got banged up there,” Bianco said. “I don’t know there’s much you can say. [The team] seen it, been through it.

“Obviously, when your teammate goes down, you feel for him, but, obviously, there’s a lot of game left, and so you got to play the game. And so he’s going to be OK. He’ll be back on the field… We’re glad we got a good one in his stead.”

Ole Miss advanced to the SEC Tournament quarterfinals after defeating Florida 3-1 on Wednesday. Isaac Humphrey and Moerman both played pivotal roles in the victory, recording a combined two hits and two runs.

The winner between Ole Miss and Arkansas will advance to the SEC Tournament semifinals to face off against the victor between LSU and Texas A&M. The semifinals game will be at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday.
