Steve Spurrier floats Trinidad Chambliss as a possible Heisman Trophy winner

The college football season is getting ready for the month of November. That means every race, from conference championships to the College Football Playoff to the Heisman Trophy, is heating up. As the latter of those races is hotly competitive, former head coach Steve Spurrier floated the idea that Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss could win it.
This came on during a recent episode of Another Dooley Noted Podcast. There, while discussing the Heisman race, Spurrer brought up Chambliss and his odds.
“The guy at Ole Miss… Chambliss, Trinidad Chambliss,” Steve Spurrier said. “Trinidad may win the Heisman. Who knows?”
By no means is Steve Spurrier the only coach to take notice of what Trinidad Chambliss has done this season. Prior to their game last weekend, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables praised him for what he’s been able to do this season.
“Quarterback is just fabulous, man. He’s a winner. Being a former national champion [Ferris State], had over 4,000 yards and 51 touchdowns in one season. Most guys go through a whole career and don’t hit those numbers,” Venables said. “And he’s thrown for just under 1,600 yards, eight touchdowns, only one interception on the year. He’s rushed for 323 yards, so about 50 yards a game, just enough to kind of piss you off, five touchdowns.”

By now, the Trinidad Chambliss story has been well covered. A Division II transfer from Ferris State, he didn’t win the job coming out of camp. Instead, it went to Austin Simmons. However, Simmons was injured in Week 2 against Kentucky and Chambliss hasn’t given the job back since. In the process, he’s positioned Ole Miss for a potential Playoff berth.
Chambliss is more than a good story, though. He holds up statistically too. In eight games, he has completed 61 percent of his passes for 1,864 yards and 9 touchdowns and just a single interception. That includes an SEC-leading 14.6 yards per completion. On the ground, Chambliss has 376 rushing yards for 5 touchdowns.
By no means is Trinidad Chambliss a Heisman Trophy favorite. In the most recent On3 Heisman Poll, quarterbacks Ty Simpson, Fernando Mendoza, and Marcel Reed round out the top three. Chambliss came in at seventh overall.
From here, Chambliss has four games to finish making his statement for the Heisman voters. That starts this upcoming weekend when Ole Miss returns home to play South Carolina. Win there and win in impressive fashion, and he could continue climbing into people’s minds.
