Tim Tebow opted for Trinidad Chambliss over Austin Simmons for Ole Miss moving forward. Through six games, Ole Miss is ranked No. 5 in the country and unbeaten going into Saturday’s game at Georgia.

Chambliss has steered the ship through the last four games after Simmons was injured following his two starts at the start of the year. Did Chambliss do enough on the field in his four wins to earn the starting gig the rest of the way?

According to Tebow, he has. If the Rebels knock off the Bulldogs in Athens with Chambliss at the controls, this could be a historic run for Lane Kiffin and crew.

“Yeah, there’s no doubt Austin Simmons can play. He is a really good player. He can absolutely sling the rock. But I believe that Trinidad Chambliss has done enough to earn the job,” Tebow said on SportsCenter. “I really believe it is his job. He’s got an 87 QBR, he has led the team, he has been incredible on third down in the red zone, he’s done great with his legs in big games, especially in clutch moments this year.

Trinidad Chambliss the guy moving forward?

“And then he’s a better passer than people give him credit for. This is that dynamic young man, and I think you got to give Lane Kiffin a lot of credit. He saw into the future and saw someone that other people didn’t. He said ‘this kid could be special.’ Undersized, not recruited. They went out and got him. No one knew who he was, but then that’s what Lane Kiffin does. He sees something special and he saw this young man that other people just saw, ‘Oh, this is, you know, I don’t know,’ but he saw the diamond in the rough, and now he’s turning out to be someone that is extremely special.”

This is Chambliss’ first season at Ole Miss after playing Division II football. He has 1,286 yards, seven touchdowns, one interception and a 65.4% completion percentage. He also has 281 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

For comparison, Simmons has 580 yards, four touchdowns, four interceptions and a 60.7% completion percentage. He’s not as much of a runner, but had 16 attempts for 69 yards and one touchdown.

As mentioned before, a win over Georgia only vaults the fifth-ranked Rebels higher in the polls. And that would assuredly keep Chambliss in the starting role barring injury.
