Trinidad Chambliss injury update: Austin Simmons replaces QB, throws TD despite leg issue

Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss exited Saturday’s game against Arkansas in the second quarter due to a right hand injury. Surprisingly, Austin Simmons came in to replace him despite the fact that he did not start the game due to an ankle injury.
Simmons led the Rebels on a touchdown drive, but not before appearing to aggravate his ankle injury on an eight-yard run. He connected with Harrison Wallace III for a four-yard touchdown on the next play but was seen with a significant limp as he came off the field.
Thankfully, Chambliss taped up his right thumb and was able to return for the Rebels’ next offensive drive. He ended the first half with 231 yards passing to go with two touchdowns on the ground.
Rebels coach Lane Kiffin offered an update on Chambliss during his halftime interview with ESPN. It doesn’t appear that the injury is too serious and the QB seems likely to finish out the game for Ole Miss.
“He had blood so they might him come out for a snap,” Kiffin explained. “Great job by Austin coming in for a scoring drive. Both guys have done a really great job.”
Ole Miss holds a 31-28 victory over Arkansas at halftime and will get the ball first to start the second half. However, while they got good news on Chambliss, the worry will now turn to whether Simmons suffered a setback during those two plays that he entered for.

Simmons suffered the ankle injury the week prior in a contest against Kentucky. Chambliss replaced him in the fourth quarter.
Simmons started this week listed as ‘Probable’ on Wednesday’s report. Simmons practiced on Friday, according to Rebel Grove’s Chuck Rounsaville, though it was a walk through practice with no contact. He took snaps with the second team for a second-straight day while Trinidad Chambliss took first team reps as he has all week.
Ole Miss will hope for the best in Simmons’ recovery thoughout next week and that his time playing Saturday didn’t set him back too much. For now, they’ll lean on Chambliss to help get them through the remainder of this game and lead them out with a victory to start SEC play 2-0.
So far it’s been an offensive battle with Razorbacks QB Taylen Green putting up big first half numbers as well. That in mind, whichever defense tightens up in the second half could help their team emerge victorious.
