SMU clinches spot in ACC Championship game after win over Virginia

One half of the ACC Championship Game is set. SMU has clinched a spot in the ACC title game with Saturday’s 33-7 win at Virginia.
The victory improves SMU to 10-1 (7-0). The regular season finale for the Mustangs is next weekend against Cal.
SMU has now reeled off eight straight wins after falling to BYU back in early September, and the Mustangs can finish off an undefeated season in ACC play next week against Cal.
Rhett Lashlee’s team will play either Miami or Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. It will be played on Saturday, Dec. 7 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
Miami can clinch a spot in the ACC title game by beating Syracuse in its regular season finale next weekend.
As for Clemson, the Tigers have already finished off a 7-1 record in ACC play. However, due to tiebreakers, they need Miami to suffer a second ACC loss in order to reach the ACC title game. Miami entered Saturday’s game with Wake Forest with a 7-1 mark in ACC play.

SMU joined the ACC ahead of the 2024 season, coming over from the American Athletic Conference. It’s clear that the Mustangs were ready for the step up in competition as they have been one of the best stories in college football this year.
It’s the offense that gets a lot of the headlines, but Lashlee’s squad also has a really good defense. They proved that Saturday against Virginia in another impressive performance.
Speaking of Rhett Lashlee, he was rewarded for his strong season on Friday as he received a raise and contract extension. He followed that up by clinching a spot in the ACC Championship Game the next day.
With quarterback Kevin Jennings, running back Brashard Smith and plenty of other talented players, SMU will be a handful for whoever it plays in the ACC title game. The Mustangs could also be a tough matchup for someone in the College Football Playoff.
