The Texas A&M Aggies were without two defensive backs for their season opening win over UTSA, with Dalton Brooks and Jordan Shaw both sidelined. Now, head coach Mike Elko has shared a positive update on Brooks. He’ll be able to play in Week 2 for the Aggies.

With practice underway this week, Elko shared a quick update, saying, “Yeah. He’ll be available this week.” With that, Texas A&M is getting a boost to the depth on the back end of its defense.

Dalton Brooks was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2023. He was the 105th-ranked player overall and the ninth-ranked safety in that recruiting cycle. Last season, Dalton Brooks made 59 total tackles, including six tackles for a loss and a sack. He also had an interception and two passes defended.

After playing 25 games over the last two seasons, there was an expectation that Brooks would break out in 2025. However, he entered the UTSA game without pads and did not play. That came as a bit of a surprise at the time, given there had been no prior injury disclosure. Luckily, it appears to not have been anything serious. Brooks did, notably, run into legal issues over the offseason, getting arrested following an alleged hit-and-run incident. At the time, Elko said, “We’ll look into it internally, we’ll handle it internally. It’s not something we’re going to talk about how we’re handling it.”

Regardless of what kept Dalton Brooks out of the UTSA game, he’s healthy and ready to go now. That’s going to be a big boost for Elko and the Aggies on the defensive side of the ball.

“I think, obviously, he’s a really talented player,” Elko said. “He’s a really good run and hit safety. We really think he’s even gotten a lot better this offseason. So, we’re excited to get him back and get him in the fold.”

Mike Elko did share that the other injured Texas A&M defensive back, Jordan Shaw, has a lower body injury. That’s going to make him day-to-day. So, for the time being, it’s unclear if he’s going to make it back for Week 2.

In Week 2, Texas A&M is set to host Utah State. After that, the Aggies are going to want to be as healthy as possible moving forward. The schedule ramps up with a road trip to Notre Dame in two weeks and then the start of SEC play.
