4-star TE Jake Johnson commits to Texas A&M on National Signing Day

Bogart (Ga.) Oconee County four-star tight end Jake Johnson tells On3 he has committed to Texas A&M. The pledge to the Aggies comes just over a week after the 6-foot-5, 225-pound Johnson decommitted from LSU.

Johnson is the son of Brad Johnson, who spent 15 years playing quarterback in the NFL and won a Super Bowl title with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Johnson’s brother, Max, was a quarterback at LSU before entering the transfer portal the same day as Jake’s decommitment from the Tigers.

Texas A&M is now up to 22 commitments in the 2022 class. The Aggies are in the midst of a battle with Alabama and Georgia for the No. 1 recruiting class in 2022.

The most polished pass-catching tight end in the 2022 cycle. A big target at over 6-foot-5 with an extremely large catch radius. A pure ball-winner in contested situations. Comes down with jump balls at a high rate. Has an innate ability to use late hands and make difficult catches. Capable of one-handed grabs and adjusting to inaccurate passes. High-points, balls thrown behind him and scrapes low thrown passes off the ground. Magnet hands in holding on to the ball through contact. Pairs the advanced ball skills with route-running ability. Runs a full route tree. Lines up both in-line and split out. Bursts out of a three-point stance. Loose with significant shake at the top of routes, breaking the ankles of safeties. Snaps off his route on deep comebacks. Has been a standout performer at the high school level dating back to his sophomore season. Put on a show at LSU’s camp in the summer prior to his senior season. Not the best pure athlete among top 2022 tight ends but good enough in that regard. The most refined pass catcher of the group with a high floor points favorably to an early impact at the college level.
