Jimbo Fisher is watching all his position groups with a keen eye, but the tight end room is gaining immense interest from the Texas A&M coach. During spring practice, one athlete who caught Fisher’s eye has been tight end Blake Smith.

In a press conference last week, Fisher gave some insight into the steps Smith is taking to becoming an important piece for the Aggies.

“Yeah, he’s getting better,” Fisher responded, when asked about Smith’s progress. “He’s got a lot of work to do. But Blake has been — he’s caught balls, had some really good days. Gotta be more consistent in what he does. But he has a chance to be a good player. And if he can keep doing it, he’s got to get more physical. Gotta get stronger at the points of attack. Do those things. And even when he’s running routes. Be more strong handed and do that. But he is a talented guy that has good ball skills.”

Blake Smith is a former three-star recruit out of Southlake, Texas, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average. While he hasn’t put his stamp on the Aggies yet, its evident Jimbo Fisher is expecting more out of the young tight end as the 2022 season approaches.

Jimbo Fisher updates health, progress of tight end room

Jimbo Fisher shed some light on the Texas A&M tight end room as the Aggies go through spring practice. Fisher is looking for someone to step up with star tight end Jalen Wydermyer leaving for the NFL, and the Texas A&M coach is looking towards Jake JohnsonMax WrightFernando Garza and Blake Smith.

“Jake [Johnson] has been nicked-up. Hopefully we’ll get him back this week,” started Fisher. “He had a week and a half of really good practice. Young guy, for him. But then, Max [Wright] has been really consistent. We had a really good spring, catching the ball better, blocking well. [Fernando] Garza. Blake Smith, I thought he had a really nice scrimmage the other day. There’s something — he’s got to get better in the blocking world. And some of those things. But I thought he had a nice scrimmage, executing some things in that regard.

“Those guys, they’re getting better and better.”

As you can see, Jimbo Fisher is seeing his tight end room progress throughout the spring. As the Aggies figure out their quarterback conundrum for the upcoming season, whoever gets the lion-share of snaps at tight end will need to be on the top of their game.
