Jimbo Fisher reflects on 'we're going to beat his ass' comment on Nick Saban

Texas A&M did the seemingly unthinkable on Saturday night when it defeated powerhouse Alabama. It is the first time Alabama has lost in quite some time after going undefeated last season and starting this year 5-0. Following Texas A&M’s 41-38 victory, head coach Jimbo Fisher was asked about previous comments he made about beating Nick Saban and Alabama.
Back in May, Fisher was asked about what it would take other than Saban retiring for Texas A&M to defeat Alabama. Fisher responded by saying that he plans to take Alabama down even with Saban there. He did just that on Saturday.
“We’re going to beat his ass when he’s there,” Fisher said in May. “Don’t worry.”
Fisher after Texas A&M’s win over Saban, Alabama: ‘I don’t think I’m gonna lose to him’
Fisher said after the game that his comments back in May about Texas A&M Saban were all out of competitiveness. He went on to say that he and Saban are friends and have serious respect for each other.
“Well, that was more the competitor in me coming out when somebody says you can’t do something,” Fisher said after Texas A&M’s victory with a laugh. “I have a bad habit of that. So, I get a little competitive sometimes. But listen, for our team it goes back that our team understood and beat a really good football team who was a well coached, well played, well talented, very talented, good football team. And that’s what’s important to me.

“Listen, I have the utmost respect for Nick Saban. I always have, always will. And I consider us friends and I think he does too. But we’re competitors. And like he said, he didn’t think he was gonna lose to me either. I mean I don’t think I’m gonna lose to him. That’s just ball and I respect him for that. We grew up in the same neck of the woods. We had a lot of the same water.”
Fisher got his wish as Texas A&M jumped out to an early lead in the game and led 24-10 at halftime. Despite Alabama outscoring the Aggies 28-17 in the second half, Texas A&M held onto the close victory.
