New Texas A&M commit Anthony Maddox: 'Coach Petrino said I remind him of Lamar Jackson'

On300 quarterback Anthony Maddox Jr. enjoyed a rigorous January of visits across the country, and now one of the nation’s top 2024 signal-callers has a decision made.
Maddox committed to Texas A&M on Monday over Alabama and Penn State. The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder out of Hattiesburg (Miss.) Oak Grove was a priority target for first-year Aggies offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, who likened the talented Missississippi quarterback to one of the NFL’s best.
“This decision was based off the coaching staff and the atmosphere,” said Maddox, who visited College Station on the final weekend of January. “Coach Bobby Petrino was very upfront with me that I’m their guy for the 2024 class. Coach Fisher paired with Coach Petrino just makes for a very explosive offense.”
“What separated A&M was the players on the team and the coaching staff,” he continued. “Coach Petrino said I remind him a lot of Lamar Jackson.”

The comparison by Jackson’s former coach at Louisville was the catalyst.
“He was so straightforward with me,” Maddox said. “Any time you get compared to someone such as Lamar Jackson, I was just blown away with the comparison. That very day Coach Petrino offered me and he wanted me to commit on the spot.”
Petrino got his wish — albeit a few weeks later.
