Paul Finebaum believes Johnny Manziel's tweet set him back with program

The reputation of Johnny Manziel is a divisive one, especially in College Station. He’s an all-time great player for Texas A&M, but the antics that routinely put him in the headlines can rub even the biggest Aggie supporters the wrong way. After A&M’s loss to Alabama this weekend, he was at it again with some hot takes on Twitter. To Paul Finebaum, he believes it once again cost Manziel some ground he had made up as of late.
Finebaum spoke about Manziel’s tweets while recapping Week 6 with Matt Barrie. He thinks the tweets soured the fanbase on what they could have considered a moral victory. In the end, it was just the latest example of Manziel making himself the enemy.

“The most important thing I distilled from this game was a late night tweet by Johnny Manziel, who was the star of this game 10 years ago,” said Finebaum. “Had he not tweeted anything, I think Aggies would feel pretty good. But the fact that Manziel, the most famous Aggie ever, tweeted as the game ended that that was the worst play call he has ever seen and it was a joke? I think it’s going to resonate pretty loudly in the world of Aggieland. Just as he was working his way back into the good graces of the Aggies, I think he is now back to being Johnny Manziel.”

Manziel had several tweets after the loss about the controversial final play call from the A&M offense. With one play left for the win, Haynes King threw an incomplete pass to the outside corner to Evan Stewart. Plenty questioned the call, but Manziel took his criticism a step further with his thread.
There’s no questioning the exciting player Manziel was while at A&M in 2012 and 2013. However, a moment like this is yet another example of why his relationship with the school has decayed. While many may have agreed with him, it was yet another reason for Manziel to be brought up negatively.
