Rueben Owens downplays concerns of sharing snaps in Texas A&M RB room

Going into the 2025 season, Texas A&M has an embarrassment of riches in the running back room. Last year’s top four rushers all return, as does Rueben Owens, who missed most of last season with an injury.

There’s a ton of past production in the group. Le’Veon Moss has accounted for 1,363 career yards and 16 touchdowns. Amari Daniels has run for 1,512 yards and 15 scores. EJ Smith has run for 764 yards and five scores.

It might be a simple question that plagues the room. How does everyone stay happy?

“We all there for each other,” Owens said. “There’s no hating, there’s no getting mad when someone else goes in. We just, we stay together. If one of us make a big play, somebody on the sideline, we all running down the sideline congratulating him. So there’s no hating, none of that.”

That attitude will be put to the test this fall. Owens will want his carries just as much as anyone else. But with four capable backs, touches are going to be tough to come by.

Can Texas A&M live up to the mantra Owens preached? Doing so might be vital to team chemistry.

Rueben Owens back to 100% health

Owens was one of a few running backs for Texas A&M who missed time due to injuries last season. He was hurt in fall camp and didn’t return until December.

Now? He’s feeling great.

“I’m way healthy,” Owens told reporters in fall camp. “I feel way better. Way faster, way stronger. My cuts are more fluent. So back then, my cuts, they were fluent, but it would hurt and I couldn’t really get out of my breaks. But now I feel regular, like 100%.”

Owens was a 2023 SEC All-Freshman Team selection after rushing for 385 yards and three touchdowns. Owens also recorded 12 catches for 109 yards.

He got work in on special teams, too, tallying 12 kick returns for 249 yards. His 743 all-purpose yards led all true freshmen in the SEC in 2023. He was supposed to be a force for Texas A&M in 2024. Then the injury struck. He admitted it was not easy.

“When I first got injured, I was in a mental drought for a little while,” Rueben Owens said. “But it’s football, things happen. Injuries happen in football, but you just — you can’t be down forever. You’ve got to get back up, get around the team. When you get around the team, it lifts you up a little bit.”
