Texas A&M is locking in its athletic leader for the long haul. On Friday, the university announced a new six-year contract extension for Director of Athletics Trev Alberts, keeping him in College Station through 2031.

The move was approved by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents and signals firm confidence in Alberts’ vision. Interim President Tommy Williams said Alberts represents exactly the kind of steady and forward-thinking leadership the program needs.

“As we navigate the changing college athletics landscape, Trev Alberts’ professionalism, knowledge and business-minded approach is just what we need to compete boldly in the future,” Williams said via press release. “His new, extended contract reflects our confidence in a leader who embodies our core values and understands the heartbeat of Aggie Athletics is the 12th Man.”

Since arriving in March 2024, Alberts has overseen one of the most successful stretches in modern Texas A&M athletics. The Aggies have captured two national championships — women’s tennis claiming its first in program history in 2024, and men’s outdoor track & field winning its fifth in 2025.

A&M has also added four SEC titles under his leadership. That includes back-to-back women’s tennis championships, men’s indoor track & field in 2025 and the 2025 SEC Tournament crown in softball.

Meanwhile, more national title pushes followed as well. The Aggies’ women’s tennis team made another run in 2025, while baseball reached the championship series in 2024.

This year, two programs are having historic seasons. Texas A&M football is 10-0 for the first time in over three decades and sits at No. 3 nationally. Volleyball has surged to a 22-3 record, its best regular season since 1984, and enters postseason play ranked sixth in the country.

“We’re fortunate to work alongside extraordinary coaches, staff and student-athletes who pour themselves into their programs every single day,” Alberts said. “The momentum we’ve built over the past 20 months is real, and I’m energized by the opportunity to continue elevating this department with them.”

Before arriving at Texas A&M, Alberts served as Nebraska’s AD from 2021–24 and previously led Nebraska Omaha for 12 years, guiding the school from Division II to Division I. Aggies head football coach Mike Elko praised Alberts’ leadership and partnership, noting the importance of continuity as A&M climbs toward national prominence.

“We’re building something special here at Texas A&M, and my partnership with Trev is an integral part of that,” Elko said. “This contract ensures continuity in the momentum we’ve already created, and I’m excited about our future.”

With unprecedented success across multiple programs and a clear long-term plan, Texas A&M is betting big on Alberts. Time will tell if he can steer the university into its next championship era, but he’s off to a heck of a start so far.
