Texas A&M coach Mike Elko names Miles O'Neill backup QB to Marcel Reed

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko announced second-year man Miles O’Neill will be the backup quarterback to Marcel Reed. The depth chart is set.
O’Neill was five-of-six passing for 51 yards and a touchdown as a freshman. But, he’ll be called upon if needed this season.
As a member of the Class of 2024, O’Neill was a four-star recruit out of Marblehead (Mass.) and played football at The Hun School (N.J.), according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. He was the No. 4 overall prospect in New Jersey, the No. 21 quarterback in the class and the No. 283 overall prospect in the class.
O’Neill actually stuck with the program despite a coaching change from Jimbo Fisher to Elko. Now, he’s up on the depth chart.
“When I went on my official visit I felt wanted,” O’Neill said when he committed to Texas A&M in June of 2023. “The coaches kept telling me I was their guy and how much they wanted me. The players and the coaches all have that winning mentality.”

He joined a two quarterback class at the time and Reed was at Texas A&M as part of the Class of 2023. None of that bothered O’Neill when he signed on.

“It doesn’t play a big factor in my decision because I like to compete,” O’Neill said. “There is no problem for me in being a part of a 2 QB class and I can’t wait to get to work.”
The highlight of the QB room is Reed though, someone Texas A&M legend Johnny Manziel is thrilled about. He expects big things out of the Aggies in 2025.
“I had a good conversation with Marcel Reed this week,” Manziel said. “I’ve been watching some practice film and stuff, trying to give him some pointers that I think could help him out. But, [I’m] excited for [head coach Mike] Elko, the vibe he brings, what he means to the program. He embraces the Aggie Spirit.
“So, expecting better things. I say this every single year, but I feel confident with where we are. We really have some players. He’s done a good job recruiting. So, you know, I’m hoping for the best.”
