2025 WCWS: Texas bats break out, seal first national championship with win over Texas Tech

For the third straight night, Texas had to go up against NiJaree Canady. The Texas Tech star and two-time reigning Pitcher of the Year held the Longhorns to five total runs through the first two games of the 2025 WCWS final.
Texas matched that run total quickly, putting up five runs in the bottom of the first inning, and it was off to the races from there. The Longhorns not only came away with the 10-3 victory, but their first national championship in program history.
Canady entered Friday’s game with a 34-6 record and a 0.94 ERA to maintain her status as the best pitcher in the sport. She remained dominant through the Women’s College World Series, throwing every day of Texas Tech’s stay in Oklahoma City.
That changed after the first inning. Texas struck quickly – and the big swing came from Leighann Goode, who launched a three-run home run to make it a 5-0 Longhorns lead before Canady got the final out. Then, for the first time in the 2025 WCWS, Gerry Glasco went to the bullpen.
Chloe Riassetto took over in the second inning, and Texas added another run in the third when Katie Stewart launched an RBI double to make it a 6-0 lead, putting the run-rule in sight. Then, Mia Scott came up with the exclamation point, sending a grand slam to deep center field to make it a 10-0 Texas advantage.

Texas Tech wasn’t done yet, though. The Red Raiders put up three runs in the fifth inning to keep the game alive and eventually sent it to a full seven innings. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit as Teagan Kavan spun a gem in the circle.
None of those three runs were earned, and Kavan added three strikeouts to get the biggest win of her young career. It also capped off an impressive WCWS run, which started with the win in a thrilling Game 1 as she threw seven innings of three-hit ball while only allowing one run in the fifth.
With the victory, Texas brings home its first-ever national championship. It wasn’t for a lack of trying, though. This year marked the Longhorns’ third appearance in the Women’s College World Series finals, but the first two berths ended with losses to rival Oklahoma amid its historic four-peat.
Texas played a role in ending the Sooners’ historic run this year with a 4-2 win at Devon Park to send OU to the losers’ bracket. Now, UT has its first national championship in a pinnacle moment for Mike White, who also has his first career title in his seventh season in Austin.
