Jim Schlossnagle and Texas shook the college baseball world back in June, hiring him away from Texas A&M just hours after the College World Series ended. UT athletic director Chris Del Conte is now reunited with one of his best friends as Schlossnagle looks to guide the Longhorns into the SEC.

Contract details for the move have been revealed, with Schlossnagle signing a seven-year contract with Texas. He is set to make a total of $15.4 million for an annual average of $2.2 million. A pay increase from his time in College Station as a new era begins on the 40 Acres.

Schlossnagle spent the past three seasons with Texas A&M, taking the Aggies to two College World Series. On both of those runs, Texas wound up as an opponent but the maroon side of the rivalry won out — the first came in Omaha in 2022 and then in the College Station Regional just a few weeks ago.

Everywhere he has been as a head coach — UNLV, TCU, and Texas A&M — Schlossnagle has found a way to win. Texas is expecting the same and paying him like one of the top coaches in college baseball.

Jim Schlossnagle hired to be Texas head coach

In an exit statement via Texas A&M, Schlossnagle mentioned his relationship with Del Conte as a reason why he decided to join Texas. “Longtime friends” are reuniting and hoping to do special things with the Longhorns. Both are fired up about the hire, with Del Conte saying so when the move was officially announced.

“What a great day it is to be a Longhorn,” Del Conte said in a statement. “We are absolutely thrilled to have Coach Schlossnagle joining our Longhorn Family, and like everything we do, we couldn’t have made this happen without the incredible leadership in our chairman of the board of regents and our president.

“Chairman Eltife and President Hartzell are a critical piece in every decision we make, they are such great friends and counsel, and together help us make great days like today happen for Longhorn Nation. I can’t thank them enough.”

Schlossnagle was the head coach at TCU when Del Conte took over as the program’s athletic director in 2009. The two began to build their bond and continued to be friends despite Del Conte leaving in 2017. Seven years later, the reunion is taking place in Austin.
