Glen Powell helps Texas surprise linebacker Marshall Landwehr with scholarship

Glen Powell has seen his star turn in Hollywood, but he’s remained loyal to Texas over the course of his acting career. The Top Gun: Maverick star helped the university in an awesome way this week.
Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns decided to handout a well-earned scholarship the walk-on linebacker Marshall Landwehr, and they enlisted Powell to aid. He recorded a heartfelt message announcing the move that the coach played in front of the team to reveal the news.
“What’s up Longhorns? It’s Glen Powell, fellow Texas alum,” Powell stated, via TMZ Sports. “I have new found respect for what it takes to join a football team.
“It takes grit. It takes grind. And most importantly, it takes heart. Marshall, your hard work has not gone unnoticed. That’s why Texas is giving you a scholarship.”
That’s a pretty awesome story that the now-former walk-on will be able to tell. As Powell mentioned, he’s a Texas alum, so the moment was extra special for the actor, as well.
In his Texas career, Landwehr has been a part of the team’s special teams unit. He’s mainly factored in on punt and kickoff, recording six tackles with four coming on special teams. Now, he’ll be on scholarship, and possibly receive more opportunity in 2025.

“When we talk about everybody in this room has a role in the organization, this is the epitome of that dude,” Sarkisian added, following Powell’s announcement. “I couldn’t be more fired up for you man. Congratulations!”
Alas, the beautiful moment precedes what could be a stressful season for Texas. They were just ranked No. 1 in the initial Coaches Poll, and they have national championship expectations following two straight years making the semifinal.
Arch Manning is taking over at quarterback, and he’ll have the weight of the world on his shoulders. Additionally, this is arguably the best team Sarkisian has put together over the course of his Texas tenure, so it’s easy to see why many believe the Longhorns will be among the top teams in the nation.
One thing is for sure, Glen Powell will be rooting hard for his team, and watching Marshall Landwehr make some plays. It all begins with a Week 1 showdown against Ohio State, where we should learn a lot about both teams.
