Texas EDGE defender Colin Simmons entered the medical tent early in the fourth quarter of the Longhorns’ game against San Jose State. He appeared to have an upper body injury.

Not only that, Michael Taafe then limped off the field a few plays later. The defensive back was on the sideline without his helmet on after he came off with Texas holding a 38-7 lead.

Simmons was able to walk off under his own power and was smiling, for what it’s worth, as he exited the field. There was no further update with 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Coming into the game, Simmons and Taafe led a Texas defense coming off a stout performance against Ohio State. However, the Longhorns lost 14-7 on opening weekend.

Simmons and Taafe will be key moving forward on defense. If Texas has national title aspirations, they’ll have to be healthy. We’ll see what the postgame report has to bring.

Since that side of the ball wasn’t the issue last week, head coach Steve Sarkisian admitted he had frustrations with the offense. He discussed it earlier this week.

“I was pretty frustrated coming out at the first half,” Sarkisian said. “Because I felt like we had a good plan. But I wasn’t mad in the sense I felt like, if I could just calm Arch and get him into a space. That’s why we met him directly at halftime. Like I said, I thought we played a really good second half.

“If you would have told me we were going to go out and have just about 260 yards in the second half against that defense, but only score seven points, that’s where the disappointment came in that we weren’t able to get more points. Our ability to move the football in the second half.”

Arch Manning would finish the game receiving his fair share of criticism. At times, his inexperience showed, and he missed a couple of throws that fans thought he should have made. In total, he completed 17 of 30 passes for 170 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also rushed for 38 yards.
