Notre Dame Fighting Irish transfer catcher Carson Tinney has signed with the Texas Longhorns, per On3’s Pete Nakos. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Carson Tinney came to Notre Dame ahead of the 2024 season. He was a First team all-conference, and all-state honorable mention in high school. He was also a Four Year All Catholic Selection. At the 2022 Perfect Game national showcase, he was awarded fastest pop time, at 1.89 seconds, and hardest catcher positional throw, at 87 mph. Perfect Game would also go on to rank him as the 183rd player nationally.

At Notre Dame, Tinney saw solid playing time as a freshman. However, it would be in 2025 as a sophomore when he had his breakout season. In 48 games this past season, he hit .348 with a .498 OBP and a .753 slugging percentage. That’s good for a 1.251 OPS. He did that on the back of a 17-home run season with 13 doubles and 53 RBIs. Tinney also walked 34 times while only striking out 40 times.

On the defensive end, Carson Tinney has been just as good. He had a 0.991 fielding percentage, with just three errors on the season. That was on the back of 300 putouts and 35 assists. He had 338 total chances. He only had eight passed balls. On top of that, he threw out 17 out of 25 stolen base attempts against him.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Tinney has become an incredibly decorated player during his college career. He was a 2025 Buster Posey Award Finalist, 2025 Baseball America First Team All-America selection, and 2025 NCBWA All-America First Team selection. On top of that, he was a 2025 All-ACC First Team selection.

In 2025, Carson Tinney is playing in the Cape Cod Summer League. After that, he’ll be set to join the Texas Longhorns.

Texas is coming off a 44-14 season where they went 22-8 in the SEC. It was the team’s first season both in the SEC and under head coach Jim Schlossnagle. Together, they’d go on to win the SEC in the regular season. However, the Longhorns struggled late in the year, and despite hosting a Regional in Austin, they weren’t able to make it to the Super Regional.

Next season, Texas is hoping to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament and get to Omaha. Having Carson Tinney repeat his individual success from the 2025 season would go a long way to getting there.
