Texas will meet Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday, entertaining the possibility of becoming a College Football Playoff team with a win and the right breaks elsewhere.

Of course, the Longhorns still have painful memories of last year’s game against the Cowboys.

After storming out to an early lead, Texas watched Oklahoma State score the final 17 points of the game to come out on top 41-34.

“It was definitely a tough one,” quarterback Quinn Ewers said. “Came out pretty hot, 31-17 at half. And then weren’t able to finish. I think they did a really good job at adjusting to certain things and just playing to their strengths.”

Ewers was good a year ago but has been even better since, and he might be the key to a Texas victory on Saturday.

The Longhorns gunslinger has gone 213-of-305 passing (69.8%) for 2,709 yards, throwing 17 touchdowns and five interceptions. He has also rushed for five scores.

More importantly, Ewers remembers the lessons of last year’s game.

“We learned that we’ve got to be able to finish because they’re a good, solid team and they never give up,” he said.

Ewers also had a chance to watch Oklahoma State last week as he waited to see who Texas would play in the Big 12 Championship Game. And the Cowboys were locked in a riveting game against BYU.

The lead changed twice down the stretch before Oklahoma State was finally able to pull it out in double overtime.

“I was just wondering if they were going to be able to pull it out or not,” Ewers said. “It was a pretty emotional win for them. Excited to see what happens this weekend.”

Texas and Oklahoma State will kick off at noon ET on Saturday with a broadcast nationally on ABC.
