Quinn Ewers updates health after wearing ankle brace vs. Clemson
Two weeks separated Texas facing Georgia in the SEC Championship and a College Football Playoff showdown vs. Clemson. This allowed quarterback Quinn Ewers to rest up, specifically his right ankle. A brace was worn while in Atlanta but after the layoff, was not expected on Saturday night.
But one drive into the game, Ewers was seen wearing the brace by ESPN’s Laura Rutledge. He was still out there and playing well for Texas, eventually leading to a win. Rutledge still asked him about the decision during a postgame interview, though.
“I feel good, I feel great,” Ewers said. “I mean, it’s not going to hurt. So, I just decided to put it (the ankle brace) on.”
Ewers wound up completing 17 of 24 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown. His interception came off the hands of wide receiver DeAndre Moore and right into the lap of the Clemson defender. Texas will take that kind of performance from their quarterback every day of the week. Many feel as if his play directly correlates to Texas’ chances of winning a national championship.
No better way to test an ankle than the mobility, which Ewers looked comfortable at times. Numbers do not reflect with four rushes for -3 yards due to sacks but Ewers was able to move around when required.

“We were told that Quinn Ewers would not be wearing his Tayco Athletic X brace on the right ankle,” Rutledge said right before the game kicked off. “But if you look closely, he is wearing it. He was not wearing it in warmups but then had it on when he came out to play. I would imagine something happened in warmups. He’s obviously feeling well enough to be out there.”
The good news is that another extended break is coming for Texas. Nearly another two weeks will pass before taking the field once again. An early kickoff against Arizona State in the CFP quarterfinal is scheduled for noon ET at the Peach Bowl.
Ewers felt healthy on Saturday and seemingly just wanted to have some caution. And all is well in Austin thanks to a great win against Clemson.
