Reese Atwood walk-off grand slam completes Texas comeback vs. LSU

Heading into the sixth inning of Thursday’s game against LSU, Texas faced a 3-0 deficit. The Longhorns mounted a charge, though, tying things up heading into the seventh.
With the bases loaded, Reese Atwood delivered. She hit a walk-off grand slam over the left field fence to complete the comeback and take down LSU, 7-3.
Atwood hit the building beyond the wall as she sent Texas to the victory in style. It was quite the late charge from the Longhorns offense, which struggled mightily against LSU through the first five innings of play before coming through for their 12th victory in SEC play.
All seven of Texas’ runs came via the long ball in the last two innings. The rally started with a two-run blast from Mia Scott, and Joley Mitchell came through with a solo home run shortly thereafter to tie things up at 3-3. After LSU went scoreless in the top of the seventh, Texas came back up hoping to walk it off.
A costly error put a runner on first and gave Texas new life as the Longhorns eventually loaded the bases. That set the table for Reese Atwood to make LSU pay for the miscue, propelling Texas to its 40th victory of the season.

Teagan Kavan spun a gem from the circle in Thursday’s game, allowing just one earned run in her seven innings of work while striking out five. She picked up her 19th win of the season. On the LSU side, Sydney Berzon took the loss after throwing innings of shutout ball. She finished the day with one strikeout and three earned runs allowed. Atwood’s walk-off home run included four unearned runs.
It was quite the bounce back for Texas, which dropped its first series of the season last week against No. 7 Tennessee. The Longhorns’ offense struggled mightily in that series, scoring just five runs, including three in the opening victory over the Lady Vols. They then proceeded to score just once in the following two games as Tennessee won 3-1 and 4-1, respectively.
Following this weekend’s three-game set against LSU, which continues Friday at 4:30 p.m. CT, Texas has two SEC series remaining. That includes next week’s rivalry showdown against No. 2 Oklahoma in Norman. The Longhorns will then close out the regular season at home vs. Kentucky before the SEC Tournament gets underway from Athens May 6-10.
