Steve Sarkisian evaluates Texas, Arch Manning amid 28-7 halftime lead over San Jose State

Texas certainly bounced back in the first half against San Jose State, as did Arch Manning, following the Week 1 loss to Ohio State. The Longhorns raced out to a 28-7 lead due to Manning operating the offense and the Texas defense forcing four turnovers.
Manning had a great first half, going 11-of-18 for 180 yards and four touchdowns following a shaky first drive. However, he threw an interception on the final drive of the half with a chance to get a fifth touchdown on the board.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian liked what he saw, but noted that the lone turnover was something to work on. Still, it’s part of the learning process.
“Well, we had a breakdown of protection, and that’s part of the growing pains as a young quarterback,” Sarkisian told ESPN’s Katie George at halftime. “Sometimes you got to know when to eat it.”

Still, Manning looked more comfortable against the Spartans than he did against the Buckeyes. He was certainly helped out by the defense forcing three fumbles and a pick.
“Well, we really challenged them coming into the game,” Sarkisian said of the defense. “We want to get after the football. They’ve taken it to heart. They’re getting after the balls. We turned those into points for the most part, too.”

Parker Livingstone led the way with two catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Jack Endries also caught two passes for 52 yards and two scores.
Following two punts for Texas to start the game, Manning led four straight touchdown drives. Those drives were a combined 11 plays, taking advantage of Spartan turnovers.
Manning and the Texas offense stalled after that though, punting two straight times. But, the Texas defense forced its fourth turnover of the day, giving the Longhorns a shot at one more score.
However, Manning threw an interception with the ball at the San Jose State 13-yard line. Still, Texas should feel good about where it was going into the locker room.
